Summer Storm

They're no longer talking.
It really starts to sound like a yell.
And why Mom is crying no I can't tell.
When Dad screams it really seems to tear at my ear drums.
Why is he saying you're stupid and careless and crazy?
Are you a liar?
And why are you making that face at me?
I won't understand.
But I can promise you can tell me.
Urge and urge and urge and urge, to tell you that I wanted to help you.
Out of the big room and into your bedroom.
I hear them through the floor.
I picture Dad exploding.
Mom walks out the door.
She goes to your room but you're not there.
You'll come back but I don't care.
You left your little brother and sister with the bomb of Dad that you triggered.
Urge and urge and urge and urge, to tell you that I wanted to help you.
But you set a fire when you became a liar.
Or was it a flood or a quake or tornado?
It was a summer storm,
Yeah something electrical.
I am this mystery we stand.

to God and my country

If you go to the Grand Canyon,
Say the Pledge of Allegiance for me.
I'll be at home playing Paul Bunyan-
Drinking beer, cutting down trees.
What does it matter if I don't know first aid?
I've still got the merit badge.
So don't you worry if you break your leg,
I'm gonna wear it, I'm gonna sew it on my sash.
I saw Joshua running laps.
Around the gym at school last year,
He said he's never gonna stop the sun
Because the band practices on the football field.
If you grow up with the Brooklyn Bridge
Can you hear the people sing?
I'm still voting for Al Smith on his knees,
He's kissing rings.
What does it matter if I don't know first aid?
I've still got the merit badge.
So don't you worry if you break your leg,
I'm gonna wear it, I'm gonna sew it on my sash.
So if you get your wisdom teeth out
I'll say a prayer for you.
I'm sure you'll bleed and run your mouth
But it's the least, it's the most, I can do.
